When I first moved to Prospect Park Lefferts Gardens six years ago I became curious about the enormous tree sculpture that stands at the intersection of Empire Boulevard and Flatbush Avenue. 

As an artist, I have always been drawn to neglected and forgotten elements in public space.

The purpose of my work is to draw out and celebrate these elements with color. The tree sculpture,

while prominent and formidable, is curiously invisible and, as such, is the perfect element for artistic

exploration and community collaboration. 

I began to think about a public, collaborative art project that would draw attention to the trees again and

allow local school kids to be a proactive part of the changes happening in their neighborhood and, at the

same time, celebrate and preserve a familiar landmark. This past fall, I presented my idea to

Community Board 9 and received near unanimous support.  From there I have received the support of

the Department of Transportation, and PLG Arts Association. I am pleased to report that with the

support and permission of the above organizations the idea of the Flatbush Trees Project has become a

reality. 

I am inviting schools within the CB9 district to come reflect and examine the future by making

this curious icon one of purpose.  I envision going to local schools to conduct a two-hour workshop

during which I’ll give a short presentation introducing the project and then spend the rest of the time

instructing and assisting the students in constructing a simple “flower” which will be affixed to the tree;

their own unique artistic contribution on display in their neighborhood.

These are pen and ink drawings I made after studying crowd patterns while in residence at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.  All drawings will be hand delivered in a cardboard case ready for framing.
